Bên cạnh các đại từ quan hệ (WHO, WHOM, WHICH, WHOSE, THAT), mệnh đề quan hệ còn có thể được bắt đầu bằng trạng từ quan hệ (WHEN, WHERE, WHY). Trạng từ quan hệ có thể được sử dụng thay cho một đại từ quan hệ và giới từ. Cách làm này sẽ làm cho câu dễ hiểu hơn.
Chúng ta cùng tìm hiểu cách sử dụng cũng như cấu trúc của các trạng từ quan hệ này.
Các trạng từ quan hệ where, when & why có thể được sử dụng để nối các câu hoặc mệnh đề. Chúng thay thế cấu trúc trang trọng hơn của preposition + which dùng để giới thiệu một mệnh đề quan hệ.
- The house where I used to live has been knocked down.
(Ngôi nhà nơi tôi từng sống đã bị phá bỏ.)
- Do you remember the time when we all went to a night club?
(Bạn có nhớ thời gian khi tất cả chúng ta đến một câu lạc bộ đêm không?)
- The reason why I can’t go is that I don’t have time.
(Lý do tại sao tôi không thể đi là tôi không có thời gian.)
Chúng ta sử dụng where sau danh từ như place, house, street, town, country. Chúng ta sử dụng when sau danh từ như time, period, moment, day, summer. Chúng ta sử dụng why sau reason.

1. Trạng từ quan hệ When
Trạng từ quan hệ When thay thế từ chỉ thời gian, thường thay cho từ then.
Cú pháp:
Danh từ (chỉ thời gian) + WHEN + S + Động từ …
– Do you still remember the day? We first met on that day.
--> Do you still remember the day when we first met?
--> Do you still remember the day on which we first met?
– I don’t know the time. She will come back then.
--> I don’t know the time when she will come back.
2.Trạng từ quan hệ Why
Trạng từ quan hệ Why mở đầu cho mệnh đề quan hệ chỉ lý do, thường thay cho cụm for the season, for that reason.
Cú pháp:
Danh từ (chỉ lý do) + WHY + S + Động từ …
– I don’t know the reason. You didn’t go to school for that reason.
--> I don’t know the reason why you didn’t go to school.
3.Trạng từ quan hệ Where
Trạng từ quan hệ Where thay thế từ chỉ nơi chốn, thường thay cho there.
Cú pháp:
Danh từ (chỉ nơi chốn) + Where + S + Động từ …
Trạng từ quan hệ Where có thể được thay thế bằng in/on/at which.
– The hotel wasn’t very clean. We stayed that hotel.
--> The hotel where we stayed wasn’t very clean.
--> The hotel at which we stayed wasn’t very cleaen.
