In my opinion, a company should take action as soon as the defect has been identified. It may need to contact customers or put out a public notice in order to retrieve defective goods from distributors and consumers in exchange for compensation. In case a customer complains about a faulty product, a company should give a remedy in the form of a refund, repair or replacement. Plus, a company should pay compensation if the product caused additional damage, injury or death. And I’m sure it should also pay for return shipping. What’s important is that a company should refrain from becoming defensive or denying the problem.
