Well, I don’t think it is as, to my mind, face-to-face contact is nearly always necessary to form truly close friendships. It’s hard to trust people without seeing them and their spontaneous reactions in communication, and it’s impossible to be close friends with people you don’t have full confidence in. So, my answer is ‘no’.
